Elk Relief Profile on Walking Stick
Recently a co-worker of mine asked if I could carve a elk relief on a walking stick that he collected during an elk hunting trip in Colorado. I haven’t ever done much with relief carving elk, especially on a round surface of a walking stick. I did a couple of practice pieces with a knife and gouges, but wasn’t happy with the results. This particular piece is not a complete walking stick, but a small piece of cedar. I tried making a stop cut outline with my carving knife and then used a Dremel roto-tool to lower the area surrounding the elk. It is still a work in progress, but I it is starting to take shape.
Along with working on this project, I also have been working on a pattern for this coming years Christmas Ornament Exchange. I know, I know, it’s only March, but when inspiration hits you, you have to take time to pursue it.
I will keep my idea a secret for now, but I am happy with the results so far.
