We asked for some pictures from other wood cavers and received a really nice response from Camel. Camel has been carving since early last spring and became interested in wood carving after seeing a copy of Woodcarving Illustrated and doing some research on the internet. Since joining a wood carving club in the area, Camel has been working walking sticks, Harold Enlow characters and a chain and ball in a box.

Camel wants to carve a walking stick for all the family members (5 kids and 9 grandkids) and then wants to focus on some more in the round carvings.

From time to time, I like to highlight other wood carvers that have inspired me. On this edition of “Highlight on Wood Carvers”, I want to focus on Patrick Mullally the “Irishman”.

Patrick has been wood carving for six years but his work looks as if he has been carving for ten plus years. He was fortunate to start his wood carving endeavors through wood carving courses in his area and began his focus on carving faces. Further study led him to begin carving in the round. Highlight on Wood Carvers – Gene Messer

I have been bitten by the wood carving bug and want to help others to learn the joys of wood carving. Even though I am still learning every day through study and practice. Here is a highlight of one of my favorite carvers – Gene Messer.

Gene has been carving for 20 years and is self taught. He began becoming interested in carving, at the age of 39, during his first wifes battle with cancer. It gave him something to pass the time while taking care of her. She lost her battle with cancer, but Gene continues to carve.

His favorite style of carving is Flat-Plane carving which uses a knife almost exclusively. Based on that preference, it shows where his early inspiration came from. Gene was inspired by Andy Anderson and the Trygg family who also carved in the Flat-Plane style. Continue reading »

Harold Enlow has just finished some awesome wood carving books that include study sticks. These books are the ultimate wood carving book for all wood carvers, no matter what your skill level. If you are not a wood carver, but know someone that is, these would make great gifts. I hope to be able to buy everyone of them.
