After receiving the wonderful book, “Carving Small Characters” by Jack Price, I set out to carve a 2 inch character. The character turned out to look like a small Indian and I decided to further the wood carving, by attempting to put together a complete wood carving scene. I have had wood carving scene ideas floating around in my mind for a couple months and this was the perfect opportunity to incorporate those ideas.
With the Indian theme in mind, I created a scene that included a tipi, a campfire, and a TNT keg. I called the scene Lil’ Chief, Big “POW” “WOW”.
With the 2 inch Indian Chief carved and painted, I set out to create the rest of the scene. I used popsicle sticks to make the stakes for the tipi and then wrapped it in newspaper as the first layer of the wrap. I then painted an area on the front, black to represent an open flap look after the outside layer of wrap was attached. Then I used a mixture of light brown acrylic paint to make a streaked paint job on the paper. After it was dry, I cut out sections of the painted paper and attached them to the outside of the newspaper with a glue stick. I left an area of the black showing to look like the door flap of the tipi was open.
Next, using some scraps of basswood, I carved out the rocks for the campfire ring and painted them gray. Small natural twigs were used to make the wood for the campfire and then I used scrap basswood shaving dipped in light red paint to give the appearance that the fire was lit.
The base was painted green to represent grass and then I build a hoist out of basswood that holds the line in place from the TNT keg. The TNT keg is carved from basswood also and has a small fuse from a firecracker on it.
The scene turned out to be a funny, cute scene that appears that the TNT keg is about to catch on fire from the active campfire directly below it.
Here are some more pictures of the scene before and after it was painted and complete:
